Gouda bij Kaarslicht
Gouda bij Kaarslicht begon in 1956 met het ontsteken van de lichtjes in een grote kerstboom voor het stadhuis. De boom was een gift van de Noorse zusterstad Kongsberg. Twee jaar later vierde de Koninklijke Stearine Kaarsenfabriek Gouda-Apollo haar 100-jarig bestaan. Dit was de aanleiding om de ramen van het middeleeuwse stadhuis en alle huizen rondom de markt met kaarsen te verlichten. De vroegere kaarsenfabriek is nu een chemische bedrijf en heet Croda. De Gouda Kaarsen divisie is voortgezet door Bolsius uit Schijndel en ze maken nog steeds de wereldberoemde Gouda Kaarsen. Nog immer zijn zij de hoofdsponsor van Gouda bij Kaarslicht! En nog ieder jaar schenkt Gouda Kaarsen de stad honderden kaarsen voor dit lichtfeest. Voorheen was Kaarsjesaavond altijd op de tweede of derde dinsdag van december, in 2013 voor het eerst op vrijdag.
Gouda by Candlelight started in 1956 with the first illumination of the christmas lights in a tall tree, a gift from Norwegian sister town Kongsberg. Two years later the Gouda based Royal Stearine Candle Factory Gouda-Apollo celebrated its 100 anniversary for which reason the firm supplied candles to put in front of all windows of the medieval town hall and all windows of the houses surrounding the old market square. The Stearine Candle factory is no longer located in Gouda. Its successor, a chemical company, is now called Croda. The Candle division moved with its new owner Bolsius to Schijndel and still is the main sponsor of Gouda by Candlelight; the company still supplies the hundreds of candles illuminating Gouda’s pictoresque medieval city centre. The event was always on the second or third Tuesday in December, in 2013 for the first time moved to the Friday.
